No relief from heat wave in the South, North

Pray for rain': Scorching Oklahoma's plea as forecasters warn ANOTHER massive heat wave will hit U.S. over weekend

Oklahoma's governor has begged the state to pray for rain as forecasters predicted another massive heat wave for a huge swathe of America, starting today and extending into the middle of next week.
After yesterday's brief reprieve from the baking heat, temperatures across central and eastern regions are likely to soar above 100F, and in some areas could hit 110F.
Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma will experience the hottest weather, but by the weekend scorching temperatures are expected to have spread north into the Midwest too.

Jim Keeney, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said: 'The big story for the coming weekend will be the building heat. It looks like it's going to be a long-term heat wave.'
The service issued heat advisories for ten states, down from 24 in the early part of the week as yesterday saw a let-up in the fierce temperatures.

But they warned temperatures will begin to rise again today. Cities including Topeka and Wichita in Kansas, Omaha in Nebraska and Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma are all under an excessive heat watch for the weekend.
In Oklahoma, Governor Mary Fallin called on citizens to pray for rain, as 43 per cent of the state continues to experience a terrible drought.

At the same time she issued a ban on outdoor burning in the western half of the state in an attempt to reduce the risk of wildfires in the tinderbox conditions.
She said: 'The number of wildfires we have had over the last few months is extremely tough on our state firefighters.'
Texas has also been badly affected by the heat, and is seeing its warmest summer on record. Around 72 per cent of the state is experiencing drought.
