Jack McKeon's return to Marlins expected to be official today

Jack McKeon set the bar pretty high the last time he tried this. But the historical precedent for an 80-year-old manager isn't nearly as daunting.

The Florida Marlins have scheduled a 3 p.m. press conference today amid rampant speculation from virtually everyone covering the team that McKeon is returning to manage the team for the rest of the season.
McKeon won the World Series in 2003 after he took over from Jeff Torborg in May 2003 and went 75-49 the rest of the way and grabbed the wild-card. The magic didn't last as McKeon hung around for back-to-back 83-79 seasons in 2004-05 and third-place finishes.
The Marlins haven't been to the playoffs since and have tumbled from second to last in the NL East this season while losing 19 of their last 20 games. That led to manager Edwin Rodriguez resigning before Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.
"Trader Jack," who has since been a special consultant to owner Jeffrey Loria, will be back with his familiar cigar, a trademark as attached to him as the suit and boater hat Connie Mack wore while guiding the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 years.
Mack carried a little more clout than consultant -- he owned the team -- and thus is the only older manager in major league history. He might not have lasted so long had he not also been doing the hiring and firing.more.
